Summer is around the corner. With only a few weeks until the end of the school year and the beginning of vacation season, it’s time to work on your beach body! However, while spending more time sweating it out at the gym may tone you up, your skin may be adversely affected.
Exercise can work to keep our weight under control. It gets our blood pumping, and gives our skin a healthy flush! Dermatologists agree that stimulating circulation is great for the skin, assists in keeping you appearing vibrant, and helps reduce stress. In short, maintaing a regular workout routine is vital to your health. But, it can be discouraging when you spend hours of hard work at the gym to only break out afterward.
It is important to keep in mind sweat isn’t the enemy. Sweating is good for you. Research has shown that it is not the sweat that makes your break out — there are other factors to blame. The predominant reason many break out after the gym is due to skin coming into contact with other irritants. Clothing that is restrictive or too tight can inflame the skin. Touching dirty weights or workout machines, or coming into contact with other people’s sweat can spread bacteria, irritating skin and infecting your pores.
Certain workout materials can also be irritants. For example, polyester and other man-made fabrics can trap oils and bacteria next to the surface of the skin. This increases the risk of breakouts! To curb this problem, try wearing workout clothes that wick moisture away, or choose cotton or other natural materials.
Here are some more tips for preventing breakouts after working out:
Make sure you cleanse after your workout. Taking a shower or rinsing off — even just washing your hands — is a good idea. Just in case you collected bacteria on your skin, it can be removed before it can cause a reaction.
Exfoliate more. The more you workout, the more you sweat. The more you sweat, the more you need to wash regularily. This can put your skin at risk for dryness and other issues which can also contribute to breakouts. Make sure to increase exfoliation in order to keep your skin as healthy as possible! Try Merlot’s Exfoliating Scrub!
Try exercising in a cooler environment. Working out earlier in the morning while it is cooler can help you sweat less and reduce the chance of breakouts. Give swimming a go to mix up your routine.
Choose moisturizers wisely. Many common moisturizing products can contain fragrances, preservatives and other ingredients that aggravate skin, increasing risk of breakouts. Choosing a moisturizer that is gentle on the skin and made from natural ingredients is imperative for skin health. Moisturizers such as Merlot’s Grape Seed Moisturizer are fragrance-free and contain no harmful chemicals!
